Of a different flesh
"Of a different flesh" features the works of Mär Martinez and Julia Matejcek. Each artist thinks deeply about our relationship to the world around us, using binary representations and landscape to investigate power dynamics, imbalances, and meetings. Through figurative representation, Martinez’s work challenges our need for dominance and our reliance on sexual identity, violence, and power to express this dominance. Her work confronts us, and we must grapple with these ideas, as much as the figures grapple within the pieces. Alternatively, through the absence of the figure, Matejcek’s landscapes use that void to invite us into a space of consideration, swallowing us up, and asking us to consider the power of nature and how we choose to interact with it. Both artists illustrate the violence inherent to our roles as humans in social and natural relationships, forcing us to take account of our behaviors and question our place in the world.
